Why Parental Involvement Matters
Gaming addiction in teenagers is challenging, and recovery is more successful with family support. Here's why we encourage parental awareness:
- Accountability: Parents can help monitor progress and provide encouragement
- Safety: Adults can ensure the app is used appropriately and safely
- Context: Parents understand their child's full situation and can provide additional support
- Crisis Response: Parents can intervene if their child is in distress
- Professional Help: Parents can facilitate access to therapists or counselors when needed

What Parents Should Watch For
While Lume is designed to support recovery, be aware of these warning signs:
- Increased isolation: Spending more time alone despite using a "recovery" app
- Emotional distress: Becoming upset or anxious about the app or community
- Inappropriate requests: Being asked for personal information or to communicate outside the app
- Hiding app activity: Being secretive about messages or interactions
- Worsening symptoms: Gaming addiction behaviors increasing rather than improving
If you notice any concerning behavior, please contact us immediately and consider consulting a mental health professional.
When to Seek Professional Help
Lume is a support tool, not a replacement for professional treatment. Consider seeking help from a therapist or counselor if your child:
- Continues to game excessively despite using recovery tools
- Shows signs of depression, anxiety, or self-harm
- Experiences academic, social, or family problems related to gaming
- Has co-occurring mental health or substance use issues
- Has been gaming addictively for an extended period (6+ months)
Crisis Resources: If your child is in immediate danger, call 911 (US) or your local emergency number. For mental health crises, contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US) by calling or texting 988.
